The Non + Catharsis of a Mute at 2720

End Time:
Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 1:00am
Location:

Description

The Non is a dynamic experimental instrumental rock band from Oklahoma City that engages audiences with intricate musicianship, high energy, and ethereal soundscapes. Drawing sonic cues from disparate influences such as Radiohead, Octopus Project and Grizzly Bear, The Non incorporates chaotic, dissonant guitars against sweeping, intricate melodies complemented with tight syncopated grooves by drums and bass. John Estus of NewsOK describes The Non as “one of the state’s top creative entities of any kind.”

Following up the success of their debut album, “Paper City” (2007), The Non recently released their sophomore album “Tadaima” with two consecutive sold-out shows. Their new album is a compositional shape-shifter that merges loud and chaotic elements with soothingly transcendent motifs. EarsMadeReady described Tadaima’s sound as “spacious and full, given to eruptive bursts of shimmering layers of washed out guitar lines”. After selling out OKC Resound where they played with a 15-piece orchestra, The Non recently played to a fully packed Sooner Theater (over 550 people) as a headliner at this year’s Norman Music Festival with a 25-piece orchestra. The uproar of fans unable to attend helped cause Oklahoma newspapers such as such Norman’s OU Daily and Stillwater’s O’Colly to call The Non “Most Likely To Succeed” and “Oklahoma’s most important band,” respectively.

Catharsis of a Mute (formerly Five Across the Face) is “a refreshing progressive instrumental act” from here in St. Louis.

New Riders of the Purple Sage featuring David Nelson & Buddy Cage - TWO NIGHTS in ST. LOUIS!

6.11 (Friday) w/ Elijah Palnik of The Northwoods
&
6.12 (Saturday) w/ Tom Wood & Friends

Join us for what's left of the High Times Lifetime Achievement Award winners, New Riders of the Purple Sage! Elijah Palnik of The Northwoods will open Friday night and Tom Wood & Friends will open Saturday.

In the summer of 1969, John Dawson was looking to showcase his songs while Jerry Garcia was looking to practice his brand new pedal steel guitar. The two played in coffeehouses and small clubs initially, and the music they made became the nucleus for New Riders of the Purple Sage. That same year, David Nelson, expert in both country and rock guitar, joined the group on electric lead guitar. Filling out the rhythm section in those early days were Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and engineer Bob Matthews on bass, who was later replaced by Phil Lesh. In 1970, Dave Torbert took over on bass and the New Riders played every chance they got. Soon enough, smoky clubs all over the San Francisco bay area were filling up with whooping, foot-stomping crowds as their music got tighter and more dynamic. They began to tour extensively with the Dead, and in December of 1970, Spencer Dryden, who had previously showed his impeccable drumming style with the Jefferson Airplane, had stepped in on drums.

The New Riders were signed to Columbia Records in 1971 by Clive Davis and their eponymous first album, New Riders of the Purple Sage, was released in September of that year to widespread acclaim. In December, 1971 they played a live radio broadcast with the Dead over WNEW-FM in New York to an audience of millions. In 1972 the pattern of their success continued to grow, with their first European tour followed in June by the release of their second album, Powerglide. They toured the United States extensively in response to increasing demand, and in November, 1972 released their third album Gypsy Cowboy. These first three New Riders albums were all produced by Stephen Barncard, who also worked with Crosby, Stills and Nash and co-produced the Dead’s American Beauty.

The dawn of the 21st Century found John Dawson retired to the hills of Mexico, David Nelson creating incredible music with his David Nelson Band and Buddy Cage working with an array of acts including the Brooklyn Cowboys. These three main components of the New Riders’ sound reunited in October, 2001 for band archivist Rob Bleetstein’s 40th Birthday Bash at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley, California. They performed two highly charged sets, including classic versions of “Garden of Eden” and “Portland Woman.”

The New Riders of the Purple Sage received a Lifetime Achievement Award from High Times magazine at their Doobie Awards in September, 2002 and performed a brief set (which included “Loneseome L.A. Cowboy” and “Panama Red” with Peter Rowan) at the festivities at B.B. King’s Blues Club in New York City.

Henry took off the brakes in 2006 as the New Riders of the Purple Sage went back on the road with a revived and inspired lineup, bringing the songs of John Dawson back to the ears of adoring crowds nationwide as well as taking those songs to places they’ve never been before musically. Led by David Nelson and Buddy Cage, the current touring lineup includes Michael Falzarano (Hot Tuna) on guitar and vocals, Ronnie Penque on bass and vocals and Johnny Markowski (Stir Fried) on drums and vocals.

John Dawson passed away on July 21, 2009, but before his passing he had given the guys his blessing and was excited to know his music is being heard live again by a new generation of fans. Keeping the NRPS spirit and flame alive, the band released it’s first studio album in twenty years in 2009 titled Where I Come From. Featuring a slew of new songs written by David Nelson and Robert Hunter among other band originals, the New Riders’ renaissance continues to grow, both on record and at their live shows, where they are continually breaking out new songs on every tour while staying true to the legacy that was started over 40 years ago by John Dawson and Jerry Garcia.

Cheapy Art & Cheapy Tuesdays at 2720

This summer, the St. Louis Artist’s Guild and ArtDimensions are teaming up with hip local art and music venue 2720 Cherokee to bring you Cheapy Art, the profits of which will go towards sending a group of midwestern artists who might not normally have the opportunity or the means to study and exhibit in a foreign country to Jakarta, Indonesia, for an art tour abroad.

Cheapy Art Fundraisers take off of 2720 Cherokee’s weekly Cheapy Tuesdays, which include live music for a 2$ entry fee for those over 21 (7$ for those under) as well as 2$ drink specials. The SLAG part of the deal will bring art into the mix, by including in the events a silent art auction. Bidding for auction starts at $100, for pieces valued at $500 or more. For less expensive artwork ($75–$150), there’s also a spin the bottle for art game game in which, for $20, one can spin a bottle encircled by donated artwork: whichever piece the bottle ends up pointing to, that person gets to take home.

Live music, great art, cheap drinks, fun door prizes, and all for a great cause – how could you better spend a Tuesday night?

For a schedule of Cheapy Tuesday events, see 2720 Cherokee’s website.

Slightly Askew Theater Ensemble :  Hamletmachine
Wednesdays-Saturdays, June 9-26 at 7:30 PM at
Featuring: Adam Elkana-Hale, Johanna Elkana-Hale, William Rauch, Rachel Tibbetts, Kimberly C. Weller Directed by Ellie Schwetye; Choreography by Sarajane Alverson. The plays of Heiner Muller are as dense as they are brief - shell fragments fired into our collective psyche.  What Mueller does is boil down a universally recognizable story to its skeleton.  Of his vast body of work, Hamletmachine is probably Mueller's most recognizable, and possibly the least accessible. Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble will transform Mueller's dark Hamletmachine text into a circus-like music video that both celebrates and challenges traditional theatre forms, using the best elements of pop culture to take the mystique out of the text, and make it accessible. The spectator may recognize the farce behind the so-called despair of the intellectual: Hamlet is a clown; Ophelia is a Lady Gaga.

COMING UP
The exhibition in September will be “Seeing Green”, all works featured will celebrate sustainability. In addition to the exhibition and in collaboration with EarthDance Farms, there will be a Saturday Afternoon neighborhood farmers Market.

ArtDimensions, a 501(c)-3 nonprofit arts organization, has been working hard for the past 10 years to unite St. Louis artists and art appreciators at events like this one.  Please support the arts!

Heterarchy: An Ordinary Adventure (Opening Reception at Fort Gondo)

Mostly new work by Amy VanDonsel

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 12, 6PM – 11PM

Gallery Hours
Saturday and Sunday, June 19 & 20, 12 – 4PM
Saturday and Sunday, June 26 & 27, 12 – 4PM

Amy VanDonsel’s mostly new work indulges in worries about fixating on an obsession with obsessions. Mixed media paintings and installations, which incorporate a variety of materials and techniques, scrape away at an internal adventure. There’s something to be said for choking on the words. Heterarchy is the confession of a temporary apophenia addiction, and a hug, disguised as a shrug, for nerd girls.

Time:
6:00pm - 11:00pm
Location:
