Where to find all things St. Louis on Cherokee Street
Have you been to St. Louis Curio Shoppe yet? Don't make the same mistake I did by taking my sweet time in getting over there. The doors have been open to the public for several weeks, although the official grand-opening event isn't until Saturday, October 9, 2010.
Run by pals Kristin and Kristin, the store carries a wide variety of St. Louis-made and -related goods, but this is anything other than a typical souvenir store. From locally made peanut butter to replica Coral Courts keychains there's something for everyone.
St. Louis Curio Shoppe is supportive of arts and crafts and has adorable offbeat potholders and beautifully made cutting boards and earrings and books on all things St. Louis. There are greeting cards and coasters and t-shirts. All made locally -- several by people and businesses along Cherokee. (full disclosure: I have several photos for sale there but this has nothing to do with why I'm encouraging you to head to the store.)
By the way, are you a local musician? If you've got a CD you'd like to bring by, Kristin and Kristin would be happy to give you a listen. They're actively seeking to carry local music. Why not see if yours would be a good fit for the store?
I wish I'd stopped in sooner but I'm glad I've stopped in now. So many birthday and Christmas presents are going to come from this place!
St. Louis Curio Shoppe is just a fantastic idea. Great work, Kristins!

19th-century ladies craft exhibit
The Chatillon-DeMenil House Foundation will hold its second annual 19th-century ladies craft exhibit at the house on June 13, 2010. This isn’t your everyday craft show. The event will host exhibits and demonstrations of both common and strange crafts from the Victorian era, such as silhouette cutting, crochet, tatting, spinning, theorem painting, taxidermy, and hair-work.
Special exhibit: Did you know that Victorian ladies practiced taxidermy as a hobby? One period craft book instructs her to “take out the entrails and remove the skin with the greatest possible care”. Come see examples of these strange and disturbing masterpieces.
Special exhibit: Hair-work is the art of creating images out of human hair. This somewhat odd hobby was extensively practiced by ladies in the 19th century to preserve a physical piece of the people that they cared about. Our exhibit will feature period examples of hair-work as well as live demonstrations of the different techniques ladies used to create hair flowers and jewelry.
There will be a live performance of period parlor music by the Parlor Maids at 1:00 p.m.
Admission is $5 per guest
Children’s activities for the day include a card-making workshop.
