If buildings could pose for the camera, Keith Mosier’s photographs would be centerfolds!  In them he captures the glamorous Streamline Moderne buildings of Miami’s Art Deco District.  Even when these gorgeous, wedding-cake concoctions are shabby and neglected, they’re sleek, modern, and undeniably sexy in Mosier’s photographs.  More than 20 prints are on view from June 30 - August 11, 2012 with an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, June 30, from 7-10PM.

“Miami Centerfold” is Keith Mosier’s first solo exhibition.

Hawes Photography open house this Friday

Members of the KC Art Community Relocate to Cherokee Street

Hawes Photography is the newest business to join the thriving community on Cherokee Street. This creative photography studio specializes in nontraditional wedding, family and high school senior portraits, commercial photography and fine art commissions.

"Think about portraits you’d get at Wal-mart," Aaron Hawes, owner and photographer, said. "We do the exact opposite."

Hawes Photography moved their business from Kansas City to serve the local wedding market and expand their commercial presence. "A few years ago we put out a small ad in St. Louis for creative wedding photography," Hawes said. "We were getting so many contacts from brides in the area that we knew there was a real need for our style of photography here."

The move positions the studio in the heart of an area of the city experiencing a renaissance. "There’s a great community here on Cherokee Street, and we’re excited to be part of it," Hawes said. The studio, located at 2307 Cherokee Street in the former Boots Gallery space, also offers a limited number of fine art prints and vintage cameras for sale.

The media and the public are invited to attend a ‘Meet the Photographers’ open house from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, February 18, at the studio, 2307 Cherokee St., St. Louis. For more information, visit www.hawesphotography.com or call Heather Hawes at 314-932-1300.

jeff KAPFER
jerry MILLER
mark FLORIDA

An unlikely synergy of 3 media...

Jeff Kapfer, Jerry Miller, and Mark Florida combine their talents in "Feather, Leather, Lipstick," PHD Gallery's first show of 2011. Jeff Kapfer paints a new flock of flamboyant fowl like peacocks, cockatoos, and woodpeckers. Also on view are the hand formed, leather masks of Jerry Miller whose brightly decorated disguises range in style from Commedia dell'arte to Mardi Gras. The final element in the mix is the backstage drag photography of Mark Florida which captures in glorious black and white, the frenzy and transformation backstage as the "gurls" prepare to perform. "Feather, Leather, Lipstick" not only showcases these three artists, but celebrates fantasy, masquerade, and disguise. The exhibition is on view January 22 through March 5, 2011 with a free opening reception on Saturday, January 22 from 7-10PM. Costumes are encouraged!

Softer Life: Work by Rachel Kertz at Cranky Yellow

http://www.crankyyellow.com/2010/08/19/softer-life-work-by-rachel-kertz/

Excerpt from the Cranky Yellow web site: A new collection of selected photography by Rachel Kertz, opening November 5th 2010, will expose a soft and simple world tipped on it’s edge. Rachel’s work is a snapshot into the life of counter-culture youth growing up in conservative small-town Missouri.

Her photos play out like a surreal adventures into magical worlds; Seemingly safe zones, where teens viewed as “different” by the local population can be themselves. Following a varying spectrum of subtle queerness, pop-punk aesthetics, and Victorian dress ups, her work finds quirk and beauty in unassuming places. Each portrait is an adorable testament to the difficulties of finding personal identity in a complex (and often narrow minded) world. There is an honesty and innocence here that city-raised hipsters shooting Polaroids could only wish to capture.

The collection of photos will be exhibited through the month of November 2010 at the Cranky Yellow Gallery.
Opening: November 5th 2010, 7pm till 12am

STUFF VS. STUFF THIS SATURDAY @ FORT GONDO!

MINIMALISTS BE DAMNED!

BEVERLYEAR 2010 EXHIBITION 7

ITEMS IN THE INTERIM:
AN INSTALLATION BY CARA PETERSON

Arriving from Denver with her car tightly packed with STUFF, artist Cara Peterson will mine the materially fertile basement of Fort Gondo to find more STUFF to ultimately yield her installation of, well, lots of STUFF.

ITEMS IN THE INTERIM is an installation of paintings, drawings, photographs and found sculpture that will run at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts in St. Louis from July 10 - 31st. This is a diverse collection of Cara Peterson's work that explores the unique relationships created between our unwanted objects when they end up in junk stores across the country. Peterson uses the displays set up within these spaces as sorts of accidental still lives that provide her with an honest artistic opportunity to document objects past their prime and in transition to find renewed life.

Opening Reception

Clint Baclawski/Caleb Taylor: Recent Work

Two emerging artists are brought together in Clint Baclawski/Caleb Taylor: Recent Work. Through paintings and drawings, Taylor’s work consists of concealed and abstract minimalist elements. While through the unconventional presentation of photography, Baclawski focuses on the complexity of personal interactions within our societal based consumerism. Both of their works deal with the relationship between what is hidden and what is exposed in subject matter and aesthetic values.

The Santo Foundation in partnership with Snowflake Gallery selected Taylor and Baclawski from a large pool of candidates. The foundation strives to support the careers of visual artists through grant funding, educational programs, and exhibition opportunities.
