March letterpress workshop at All Along Press

Now that we have lots of room to move around (and a serious print shop set up), we are finally getting our class schedule together!  We are devoting a huge amount of time to workshops and classes this year… With every class, we are offering a month of access to the shop with exclusive help from instructors provided throughout the month.

*Letterpress Basics and Woodcut | Saturday March 13 and Sunday March 14*

Workshop participants will learn to print on the letterpress using hand-set type, and combine that text printing with a two color woodcut image.  Make sure you bring in some sketches or ideas for images!  No other supplies required — we provide ink, type, wood blocks, carving tools, etc.

There are 8 spots available for this workshop.  Experience is not required!

*The workshop comes with a month of access to the shop any day of the week from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  Shop monitors will be available these times exclusively to assist workshop participants.*

*12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday — $120*

Loyal Family this weekend Part the Second

Says Loyal Family:

2720 is the spot to be after the Mardi Gras parade in Soulard! Performances by Messy Jiverson, Euforquestra, Spankalicious, Thump, Alpaca, and Marty Party (of PANTyRAiD).
MESSY JIVERSON (basement psychedelic)
Messy is on a mission this year to hit the road hard in support of their latest release, ROWC, available for free download at messyjiverson.com. Inspired by the sounds of dusty vinyl, dirty guitars, dangerous drum breaks and dynamic synthesizers, the band explores elements of funk, hip-hop, rock and soul in their completely original style. Heavily influenced by the loop digga movement and decades of musical history, Messy Jiverson is psychedelic rock with a hip-hop flair and hard dance beats.
EUFORQUESTRA (afro-beat, reggae, funk from Fort Collins, CO)
Known for their diverse sound and eclectic repertoire, covering a number of traditional and progressive sounds ranging from (but not limited to) reggae, dub, afrobeat and samba to ska, highlife, funk and jazz. You can also download their new album for free online at euforquestra.com.
THUMP (crunk, dubstep, hip hop) Back home from SF for a limited time only, catch him while you can. Thump sets are always a treat, filled with dance party surprises!
MARTY PARTY (of PANTyRAiD)
The MartyParty live performance is an intense journey that pulls together gorgeous instrumental, bass heavy songs, and overlays these with acapellas and samples played live. The result is a truly “crunky” and “hypy” experience like no other. Marty partnered with Josh Mayer (Ooah) of the infamous Glitch Mob, to form PANTyRAiD. MartyParty can be heard streaming at martyparty.org where he streams all of his original compositions as he writes them, before any remixing or collaboration.
SPANKALICIOUS (glitch-hop, dubstep, crunk) Focusing on music that makes the masses bounce… The high energy that Spank brings to the stage creates the ultimate party vibe! Be sure to download a copy of Connector Presents: SPANKALICOUS – The Glitchy Hippie Chronicles.
ALPACA (Columbia, MO) glitch-hop & dubstep w/ live psychedelic visuals. Think dirty bass, thin-sliced, tweaked-out, brain tickling jams, smashing hybrid Serato/Ableton sets. Peep the recent mixtape, a guest spot on FSTZ’s (K.C.MO) Rogue Dub Radio on Dubstep.FM.

Says Loyal Family:

MYSTIC KNIGHTS OF THE PURPLE HAZE CELEBRATE
MARDI GRAS AT 2720 CHEROKEE!
THE HEATERS bringing the heat with a night of Mardi Gras inspired music.
The fabled MKPH of St. Louis announces to all that the city’s Champion Krewe shall be hosting the mysteries and delights of its 2010 Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball on Friday, February 12, commencing at 8PM and featuring a legendary band from St.Louis, THE HEATERS. Famed as the virtual house-band for many years at the Broadway Oyster Bar, for this event they are bringing a night of music fit for Mardi Gras, augmented by a horn section and special guest artists. FM 88.1 KDHX/club DJ The Soul Selector, Papa Ray, will be also spinning music this evening for the proper vibe of 2010; all of this, at St. Louis’ newest alternative venue for music culture and co-mingling, 2720 Cherokee.
Amazingly, tickets are just $10.00 for this night! Tickets will be available at the door, and attendance is limited. Come and co-mingle with St. Louis’ most awarded Mardi Gras Krewe, as they prepare for the next day’s parade: be sure to see The Mystic Knights on the battle-field of Saturday the 13th, when their float and walkers go out and thrill the thousands of attendees as they have done for more than 20 years.

A Saturday full of music at Foam

Saturday, February 20, the place to hear great music -- as it often is -- is Foam.

In the afternoon, catch a set from Chris Johnson, about whom Riverfront Times and No Depression critic Roy Kasten has written: "Johnson plays well, but his music is rarely pretty: his worn, almost Tom Waitsian voice spades through earthy, witty songs, and his banged up but beautiful Gibson rings with a raw thwack and sting that may hail from the blues but also sounds like nothing else in town."

That show is Saturday, February 20 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Stick around (or come back again later) that evening for Jenny Kavanaugh, whose music has gotten its own share of props, including this: “Kavanaugh’s exceptional, beckoning voice…offers a refreshing break from rock’s more assaultive sounds…. You could listen to that enchanting voice for hours.” – St. Louis Magazine

Jenny's show is Saturday, February 20, 9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Future Rock + Prepschool (Live P.A.) tonight at 2720 Cherokee

“Future Rock is electronic sensory overload. The trio has steadily been touring the US, electrifying audiences and developing a dedicated following during their journey. Their legendary late night performances at festivals and after-parties have quickly confirmed their status at the top of the live electronic scene. Coupled with an explosive light show, FR certifies an unparalleled multi-sense experience. The Chicago-based trio exhibits an uncommon grasp of minimalist, yet visceral, rock. Skillfully manipulating live loops, synthesizers, filters and an electronic drum kit, the trio succeeds in creating a larger-than-life sound that sends crowds into frenzies.” – futurerock.net
