City Affair February: Graffiti, Art or Vandalism?

Time
Thursday, February 3 · 7:30pm - 9:00pm

LocationFort Gondo
3151 Cherokee Street
Saint Louis, MO

More Info
Graffiti is as old as civilization itself, with examples found thousands of years ago in the pyramids of ancient Egypt and the Roman city of Pompeii. In contemporary America, any resident or visitor to a city--or even small towns--will see graffiti covering overpasses, abandoned structures and the sides of buildings.

On February 3, City Affair will host a panel discussion that asks the following questions:

Is graffiti a valid form of artistic or political expression?

Does graffiti contribute to a sense that a neighborhood is blighted?

Can graffiti be a positive influence on city life, or is it always detrimental?

Who decides what is good graffiti, and what is bad?

Can different sides of the graffiti debate come to a consensus on its validity?

Please come to City Affair and contribute your opinions and questions. The panel discussion will be followed by a question and answer session from the audience. Doors open at 7:00 PM, discussion begins at 7:30.

Panelists include:

Peat Wollaeger, internationally renowned stencil artist, famous for his signature "EYE" and colorful characters & videos: www.stenSOUL.com

Angelo Olegna, "Mayor of Cherokee Street"

Raven Fox, http://www.ravenfox.net/

And additional panelists to be announced.

The Slinger at Foam October 1

Time
Friday, October 1 · 7:00pm - 8:30pm

LocationFoam Coffee and Beer
3359 S Jefferson Ave (at Cherokee)
Saint Louis, MO

More Info
A group of Saint Louis' craftiest weirdos have pooled their talents into an hour and a half rampage of talent, comedy, and music! Just like the local delicacy of the same name; The Slinger is a random pile of deliciousness piled high. The acts feature all local talent, homegrown and packed with energy. This is part of a once-a-month series, new acts each month. The following is a list of this month's acts:

Angelo's Horrible Life Stories:
Angelo Olegna tells hilarious tales from his wretched past. Bad boyfriends; growing up gay, fat, and weird; and random insanity no one should ever have to deal with. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll (especially) feel sorry for him!

We're Wolf (Band):
Anne Romer and Maya Bailey-Clark belt out sweet, folksy, haunting a cappella and ukelele beats. Sometimes harmonious, sometimes discordant; it's a mixture that is pleasant in its strangeness.

Advertising Board Meeting:
The Slinger team adopts a real, unfortunately named product or company and attempts to market them. Official spokespersons will be selected from the audience to read out promotional slogans. This month's sponsored product is a suggestively named off-brand snack found in most Save-A-Lot stores. It's real, it's unfortunate, and it's a surprise.

Oh Woetry:
The cultured member of the group, Nathan William Ford, will read a selection of woeful poetry. Rarely heard verse will prick and possibly melt the ears of our lucky audience. Expect nothing but the best in terrible writing. We'd offer nothing better.

Ye Olde Action News:
Modern, violence-focused, intense newscasts are merged with the news of the past. We've got the YOAN traffic dirigible, a surly gentlemen weather forecaster, and even a woman newscaster! Egads! Our cobblestone streets will never be the same again.

Slinger Team: Tom Cunningham, Nathan William Ford, Joanna Firestone, Angelo Olegna
