Cherokee Street wins all kinds of RFT Best Of... Awards again this year

In 2008, Cherokee Street was named the Best Mile of St. Louis by the Riverfront Times.  In the years since, various Cherokee businesses, etc., have been recognized for their awesomeness, and this year is no different.

In 2011 Cherokee is once again well-represented on the best-of list.  Here are some highlights (let me know in the comments if I overlooked anything.)

Paszkiewicz. [From 1940-2002 the printshop was a shoe store, Proper Shoes. The window displays in the storefront are once again filled with shoe boxes. However, in lieu of shoes, these screen-printed shoe boxes contain contributions from St. Louis artists in the form of zines, photographs, drawings, etc, functioning more like the shoe boxes in everyone's basement, filled with memories, photos, and keepsakes. Los Caminos is proud to present the Pruitt-Igoe Bee Sanctuary: Continuing the Conversation, artist Juan William Chávez’s public proposal for the overgrown lot where the Pruitt-Igoe housing project once stood in St. Louis, Missouri. Featuring a series of photographs and a Super 8 film, the exhibition encourages public dialogue about the creative uses and possibilities of urban abandonment.

Do The Right Thing: Exhibition Opening

More Info	In conjunction with the 2011 Southern Graphics Council International (SGCI) Conference, Los Caminos presents "Do the Right Thing: Peter Seay, Kevin McCoy and Friends." Using printmaking as a springboard, Seay and McCoy borrow imagery from hip-hop, street, and skateboard culture, blurring the line between mocking and celebrating popular visual references. "Do the Right Thing" will also include prints by Sleepy Kitty and music by 18andCounting. The exhibition will run through April 16.

Head Over Heels: Sharky’s First Love is an unfixed meditation on tenderness and the gaze of desire, as well as an invitation to alter that gaze through duration.

Amelia Colette Jones and Maggie Ginestra, co-facilitators of Sloup, St. Louis's soup dinner for the arts, are in love with how Sharky loves. You might even say they are head over heels. Amelia used to work with Sharky. Maggie rode a train with him to Chicago, once.
