RFT Best of 2010 list salutes Cherokee Street once again
A couple of years ago, The Riverfront Times awarded Cherokee Street with its Best Mile of St. Louis distinction. They were right then, and Cherokee continues to earn mentions in the RFT.
The Best of St. Louis 2010 Awards have been posted for this year and once again there are more than a couple of Cherokee-related honorees.
Congratulations are in order for the following awards:
Best Place for Belly Laugh: The Improv Trick
Best Art Gallery to Die in the Past Year: Boots Contemporary Art (sorry to see you go, Boots!)
Best Arts Organization: Sloup
Best New Band: Sleepy Kitty
Best Local Artist: Sarah Paulsen
Best Parade: People's Joy Parade on Cherokee Street
Best St. Louis-Inspired Wordplay: STL-Style
Best Junk Store: Cranky Yellow
Best New Club: 2720 Cherokee
Best Place to Slow Dance: Casa Loma Ballroom
Best Trend: "Up with the St. Louis music scene!" is the award recipient here -- with mentions of Foam and 2720 as fab places to hear and see music.
That is quite a lot of kick-assery, Cherokee art folk! Well done! (Hope I didn't miss anyone -- if I did please let me know in the comments!)

Where to find all things St. Louis on Cherokee Street
Have you been to St. Louis Curio Shoppe yet? Don't make the same mistake I did by taking my sweet time in getting over there. The doors have been open to the public for several weeks, although the official grand-opening event isn't until Saturday, October 9, 2010.
Run by pals Kristin and Kristin, the store carries a wide variety of St. Louis-made and -related goods, but this is anything other than a typical souvenir store. From locally made peanut butter to replica Coral Courts keychains there's something for everyone.
St. Louis Curio Shoppe is supportive of arts and crafts and has adorable offbeat potholders and beautifully made cutting boards and earrings and books on all things St. Louis. There are greeting cards and coasters and t-shirts. All made locally -- several by people and businesses along Cherokee. (full disclosure: I have several photos for sale there but this has nothing to do with why I'm encouraging you to head to the store.)
By the way, are you a local musician? If you've got a CD you'd like to bring by, Kristin and Kristin would be happy to give you a listen. They're actively seeking to carry local music. Why not see if yours would be a good fit for the store?
I wish I'd stopped in sooner but I'm glad I've stopped in now. So many birthday and Christmas presents are going to come from this place!
St. Louis Curio Shoppe is just a fantastic idea. Great work, Kristins!

The Slinger at Foam October 1
Time | Friday, October 1 · 7:00pm - 8:30pm |
---|---|
Location | Foam Coffee and Beer 3359 S Jefferson Ave (at Cherokee) Saint Louis, MO |
More Info | A group of Saint Louis' craftiest weirdos have pooled their talents into an hour and a half rampage of talent, comedy, and music! Just like the local delicacy of the same name; The Slinger is a random pile of deliciousness piled high. The acts feature all local talent, homegrown and packed with energy. This is part of a once-a-month series, new acts each month. The following is a list of this month's acts: Angelo's Horrible Life Stories: Angelo Olegna tells hilarious tales from his wretched past. Bad boyfriends; growing up gay, fat, and weird; and random insanity no one should ever have to deal with. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll (especially) feel sorry for him! We're Wolf (Band): Anne Romer and Maya Bailey-Clark belt out sweet, folksy, haunting a cappella and ukelele beats. Sometimes harmonious, sometimes discordant; it's a mixture that is pleasant in its strangeness. Advertising Board Meeting: The Slinger team adopts a real, unfortunately named product or company and attempts to market them. Official spokespersons will be selected from the audience to read out promotional slogans. This month's sponsored product is a suggestively named off-brand snack found in most Save-A-Lot stores. It's real, it's unfortunate, and it's a surprise. Oh Woetry: The cultured member of the group, Nathan William Ford, will read a selection of woeful poetry. Rarely heard verse will prick and possibly melt the ears of our lucky audience. Expect nothing but the best in terrible writing. We'd offer nothing better. Ye Olde Action News: Modern, violence-focused, intense newscasts are merged with the news of the past. We've got the YOAN traffic dirigible, a surly gentlemen weather forecaster, and even a woman newscaster! Egads! Our cobblestone streets will never be the same again. Slinger Team: Tom Cunningham, Nathan William Ford, Joanna Firestone, Angelo Olegna Suggested Donation: 5 Dollah |

BURN353 show at Cranky Yellow
From Cranky Yellow:
Burn353 is releasing a collection of new personal work and collaborations on October 2nd, 2010, in his first solo show: “Burn Your Bridges and Learn to Fly”. His pop-tattoo-esque paintings and collage work will punch your face with their bright colors and punk candy aesthetics. Join us as we introduce this stellar collection of work!
Drawing references from early underground iconography, Burn353 spins a perfect web of stenciled street art roughage and high-end gallery appropriate smut. His style is easily digestible and seemingly cute but leaves your mind burning with dark imagery. From piece to piece you can follow a dripping toothed skull; taking on various incarnations (from Disney inspired characters, to ice cream cones).
Cranky Yellow is also teaming up with Burn353 to bring a new addition to the shop/gallery. The collaboration is a permanent Candy and Soda shop-a-pop called The Sugar beet. This vending bar will be open during shows and events at the Cranky Yellow space. Specializing in tasty local treats, foreign candies, American favorites, and teeth-rottingly delicious soda-pop!
The show will be exhibited through the month of October 2010 at the Cranky Yellow Gallery.
