You’ve probably heard Brooklyn Indie Folk artist Jennifer O’Connor, as she’s had songs appear on numerous television shows and films such as Parenthood, Sons of Anarchy, The Ghost Whisperer, The Strangers and Private Practice. O’Connor has toured the United States many times over, playing alongside bands such as Wilco, Cass McCombs, Silver Jews, The Mountain Goats, Damien Jurado, Feist and Yo La Tengo. Cbabi (pronounced Kuh-bob-bi) Bayoc is an artist who has always known, and lived, his calling: creating art which reflects his love of music and family. Bayoc, 39, lives in south St. Louis with his wife and three kids. He grew up in O'Fallon, IL and is an alumnus of Southwestern Illinois College and Grambling State University. Cbabi's defining project this year is his impressive resolution of "365 Days With Dad." While surely very busy painting a father a day in 2012, Cbabi will be also be completing a new body of work sure to please lovers of birds and words for this exhibition at Aisle 1 Gallery.

Aisle 1 Gallery is extremely excited to bring Cbabi Bayoc's work to Cherokee Street.

Kyle Durrie, of Power and Light Press, will be bringing her mobile type-truck to The Firecracker Press on Feb 28th from 6pm-9pm. She’ll be cruising in from Alabama so please come on down, make some posters, and show her a warm StL welcome.

Kyle’s been traveling the count...ry spreading the “good word” about printing and letterpress. We’re tickled to be considered a stop on her trip! Make a collaborative poster the night of her visit… you print one color on our monster signpress and then run outside to the TypeTruck to print the second color in Kyle’s mobile printing studio.

We’ll have tons of prints for sale (as little as $2) and we’ll have plenty of snacks and drinks on-hand.

What’s better than a mobile printing studio?.. I knew you couldn’t think of anything.

Mad-Libs style Valentines at Firecracker

On Saturday, Feb. 11th from 11am – 5pm we’ll be making custom Valentine cards… mad-libs style. That’s right you fill in the blanks with nouns, verbs, nicknames, etc. and we will print ‘em up in 30 minutes or less. This year the cards are HUGE so they make a big impression as a card or a poster. And we’ll customize a standard envelope for you at no extra charge. Quantities are very limited and due to the popularity of the event we suggest you come early.

Fundrasier bean dinner for CAMP at Black Bear, January 25

Says CAMP:

We will be having a delicious BEAN DINNER fundraiser at Black Bear Bakery on Wednesday, January 25th, from 6:30pm to 9pm. There will be baked beans, chilli beans, bean soup, bean bread, bean taffey, and bean compote, along with food not involving any beans.  Come on by to enjoy this feast of protein!  Vegetarian and vegan options will be available.

We will be giving short introductions to everything that CAMP is up to for the new year, including elections for folks who help run CAMP!

We will be screening several films in the upstairs library for your enjoyment:

“My paintings are a sort of documentation and exploration of memory, personal relationships and the underbelly of the American cultural landscape. By using a range of mark making and line work I build the image within a few layers. In the paintings I allow imagery from one instance to blend into another like a seamless collage.The logic of memory works very much like the logic of dreaming and that idea has been one of the underpinnings of my work and something that I am just really fascinated by. I try to combine the fluidity of memory with a delicate line and modulated color washes that cast a poetic resonance to capture the character of a memory caught midstream.”

Luminary Center for the Arts headed to Cherokee Street?

The Post-Dispatch says it's so (with a darkroom — squee!):

The Luminary Center for the Arts has announced plans to move to Cherokee Street next year, bringing more equipment, studio space and resources to Cherokee's burgeoning visual arts scene.

Luminary co-founder James McAnally said Wednesday that the center has an option to buy a former variety store at 2700 Cherokee Street.

Samuel Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape", Live at the Firecracker Press

The Firecracker Press will host four (4), weekend performances of Samuel Beckett’s “Krapp’s Last Tape” Dec. 9-10 and 16-17 at 7pm. LIVE theater in the printshop!

KRAPP’S LAST TAPE, a 1-man Beckett classic, is said to be as near an autobiography as Beckett wrote. In it, the 69-yr-old Krapp listens to a tape of himself at 39, comments, then records a new tape reviewing the events of the last year.

With Rob Suozzi as Krapp, directed by Dennis Corcoran and presented by The Black Mirror Theatre Company.

$10.00 donation at the door.

Letterpress Printing Spring 2012 – No1 Classes at the Firecracker Press

The Firecracker Press's Letterpress Printing Spring 2012 – No1 (2012_NO1_S). is a comprehensive five week course focusing on the traditional methods of letterpress printing. Students can learn the basics of handsetting metal type, how to make a woodcut or photopolymer plate, mixing ink by hand, and learning the ins and outs of choosing paper. Our Vandercook printing presses and antique platen presses will be available for use. Each student will create an editioned piece of their design to exchange with all students, so everyone leaves the class with a small portfolio of fine prints! No prior experience needed.


DEADLINE -JAN. 9th – space is limited.
