Hello blog!
Where have I been? Obviously there was nothing going on on Cherokee Street for the past 2+ months, or I totally would have posted about it. Heh.
This blog was born out of what I perceived to be a need at the time — a one-stop-shop for art-related happenings on Cherokee Street. I was getting e-mails from one place, word-of-mouth information from another, seeing blog posts from another.... And thought it would be useful to have everything in one place, to help to tell the story of how vibrant the arts are on Cherokee Street.
In the past couple of years, it's been much easier to find this information than it once was: like many people, I keep up with lots of Cherokee Street events and art news on Facebook now, and I've seen less of a need for this blog.
But: I hate to let it die altogether. After all, not everyone is on Facebook, and not everyone wants to be. So I'm recommitting to making an effort to keep this blog updated when I see art-related stories and events related to Cherokee Street. We'll see how that goes!
In the meantime, as always, there is great information on Cherokee Street News, so be sure to visit there!

Even when these gorgeous, wedding-cake concoctions are shabby and neglected, they’re sleek, modern, and undeniably sexy in Mosier’s photographs. STATIC: Sex, Lies & Watergate Tapes
Curious about her grandfather’s insistence that Nixon was framed,
artist and writer Wonder Koch began listening to the Watergate
recordings. Koch now believes that Nixon was INDEED framed. “By those
diabolical framers of the Constitution.”
On Sunday, June 17, 2012, the 40th Anniversary of Watergate, Koch will
present a work of fiction in which audio from the Watergate tapes
serves as the backdrop for a narrator with Watergate problems of her
own. The cadence and tone of Nixon's voice had wormed into my brain. I
could hear Nixon in my head, barking orders. The thing was, this new
Nixon was usually right. When Nixon bellowed, “Time to get out of bed,
Diamond Crutcher!” I knew it really was time.
The reading will take place at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts, 3151
Cherokee Street, St. Louis, MO 63118. Doors open at 7 PM, reading will
begin promptly at 7:30.

Nathaniel Farrell was born and grew up in Western Pennsylvania before moving to New York City, where he lived for fifteen years. A recent arrival in St. Louis, he is currently completing a dissertation on modern poetics at Columbia University and teaching at Washington University. A collection of two unpublished long poems — "Newcomer" and "The Republic" — is forthcoming from Ugly Duckling Presse.
Keith Newton’s writing has appeared in Denver Quarterly, 1913, Harvard Review, Konundrum Engine, and Typo, among other journals, and his chapbook of poems Sent Forth to Die in a Happy City was published in 2009 by Cannibal Books. He is co-editor of "The Harp & Altar Anthology" (Ellipsis Press, 2010), a selection of writing from the magazine Harp & Altar, which he founded in 2006. He lives in Brooklyn.
Matvei Yankelevich is the author of "Boris by the Sea" (Octopus Books), and the translator of "Today I Wrote Nothing: The Selected Writings of Daniil Kharms" (Ardis/Overlook). His new collection of
poems, "Alpha Donut," has just been released by United Artists Books. He is a member of the writing faculty at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College and one of the the founding editors of Ugly Duckling Presse, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit publishing collective.

BPW Design Contest
Call for artists
PURPOSE
Benton Park West Neighborhood Association (BPWNA) is requesting t-shirt design submissions to use as a fundraiser for the neighborhood association. The winning design submission will be produced on t-shirts and sold at neighborhood meetings, events, and online. Proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts will enable BPWNA to fulfill its mission and enhance our community.
ARTWORK
Parameters
- Artwork should include “Benton Park West” text
- Artwork should capture the energy, diversity, and excitement of Benton Park West
- Artwork may include, but not limited to Benton Park West architecture, people, culture, landmarks, institutions, etc.
- Creativity and originality are required
- Artwork should be appropriate for all ages: children through senior citizens
- Artwork may be photos, painting (all mediums), collage, pen & ink, graphic design, computer generated
- Color or Black & White; if color, please limit to 4 color.
- 2 dimensional and sizeable up to 16in x 20 in
Submitted artwork must be reproducible. Selected artwork may be used in the following methods:
• T-shirts
• Promotional postcards
• Promotional posters
• Print media ads
• Other uses as determined by BPWNA
Please note: By entering this contest, the artist (if selected) agrees to provide a release waiver authorizing Benton Park West Neighborhood Association to reproduce the submitted image for the above usages. The printer may adjust the image for reproduction. No prize money is awarded, but the artist will receive recognition on the BPWNA website, social media sites, The Porch newsletter, press releases, and any media interviews related to the design contest.
ARTIST ELIGIBILITY
This request is open to all artists located within 100 miles of St. Louis. All ages and skill levels are encouraged to submit their work. BPWNA is not required to make recommendations or selections from the submissions if, in its opinion, qualifications are not appropriate.
DEADLINE
Must be received/postmarked by 5PM, Monday, July 2, 2012. All entries will be displayed at the Benton Park West neighborhood meeting on Thursday, July 19 at 7PM. Attendees of that meeting will vote for their top choices. Finalists will be notified by Monday, July 30, 2012. Finalists may be asked to show their original work to the August neighborhood meeting, Thursday, August 16. The designer of the winning artwork will be notified by phone/email by Friday, August 24, 2012. The voting schedule is subject to change and all contestants would be notified in advance of any scheduled changes.

DO NOT SUBMIT ORIGINAL ARTWORK. Your submissions will not be returned. After reviewing submissions, we will keep your application on file for future considerations.

Shakespeare in the Streets -- this weekend
Local Benton Park / Gravois Park / Cherokee Street business owners and residents will be appearing alongside professional actors in a play artfully adapted from William Shakespeareʼs The Tempest titled The New World, as part of the inaugural Shakespeare in the Streets, April 27-29. The event is underwritten by PNC Arts Alive and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The hour-long play will be performed at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, at the intersection of Cherokee Street and California Avenue. All performances are free.
Creative team members Tlaloc Rivas (director), Nancy Bell (playwright) and Justin Barisonek (set designer) spent the past four months in the neighborhood collaborating with the residents, immersing themselves in the culture. The three attended neighborhood events, met with residents, business owners and the community leaders in an attempt to get to know one another and to simply understand the history, the stories and the current concerns of the neighborhood.
The resulting script draws upon Shakespeare, real conversations with the residents, and the playwright’s own impressions. For example, the character Gonzalo says:
“The people here in City South, in Louis Saint,
They do be different, that much is sure.
Some immigrants, some working class
Some artists and many others, too.
But here they are. Together. Every day.
And basically, they’re...
Pretty chill
With one another.....
I would not change it.

Cbabi (pronounced Kuh-bob-bi) Bayoc is an artist who has always known, and lived, his calling: creating art which reflects his love of music and family. Bayoc, 39, lives in south St. Louis with his wife and three kids. He grew up in O'Fallon, IL and is an alumnus of Southwestern Illinois College and Grambling State University. Cbabi's defining project this year is his impressive resolution of "365 Days With Dad." While surely very busy painting a father a day in 2012, Cbabi will be also be completing a new body of work sure to please lovers of birds and words for this exhibition at Aisle 1 Gallery.

Kyle Durrie, of Power and Light Press, will be bringing her mobile type-truck to The Firecracker Press on Feb 28th from 6pm-9pm. She’ll be cruising in from Alabama so please come on down, make some posters, and show her a warm StL welcome.
Kyle’s been traveling the count...ry spreading the “good word” about printing and letterpress. We’re tickled to be considered a stop on her trip! Make a collaborative poster the night of her visit… you print one color on our monster signpress and then run outside to the TypeTruck to print the second color in Kyle’s mobile printing studio.
We’ll have tons of prints for sale (as little as $2) and we’ll have plenty of snacks and drinks on-hand.
What’s better than a mobile printing studio?.. I knew you couldn’t think of anything.

Typecast Publishing is headed home to St. Louis for a night of poetry that is "cataclysmic in all the ordinary ways." We're celebrating the launch of poet Matt Hart's latest collection, SERMONS AND LECTURES BOTH BLANK AND RELENTLESS. Mad-Libs style Valentines at Firecracker
From the Firecracker Press:
On Saturday, Feb. 11th from 11am – 5pm we’ll be making custom Valentine cards… mad-libs style. That’s right you fill in the blanks with nouns, verbs, nicknames, etc. and we will print ‘em up in 30 minutes or less. This year the cards are HUGE so they make a big impression as a card or a poster. And we’ll customize a standard envelope for you at no extra charge. Quantities are very limited and due to the popularity of the event we suggest you come early.

Fundrasier bean dinner for CAMP at Black Bear, January 25
We will be having a delicious BEAN DINNER fundraiser at Black Bear Bakery on Wednesday, January 25th, from 6:30pm to 9pm. There will be baked beans, chilli beans, bean soup, bean bread, bean taffey, and bean compote, along with food not involving any beans. Come on by to enjoy this feast of protein! Vegetarian and vegan options will be available.
We will be giving short introductions to everything that CAMP is up to for the new year, including elections for folks who help run CAMP!
We will be screening several films in the upstairs library for your enjoyment:

Night Breathing
“My paintings are a sort of documentation and exploration of memory, personal relationships and the underbelly of the American cultural landscape. By using a range of mark making and line work I build the image within a few layers. In the paintings I allow imagery from one instance to blend into another like a seamless collage.The logic of memory works very much like the logic of dreaming and that idea has been one of the underpinnings of my work and something that I am just really fascinated by. I try to combine the fluidity of memory with a delicate line and modulated color washes that cast a poetic resonance to capture the character of a memory caught midstream.”
