We will be having a delicious BEAN DINNER fundraiser at Black Bear Bakery on Wednesday, January 25th, from 6:30pm to 9pm. There will be baked beans, chilli beans, bean soup, bean bread, bean taffey, and bean compote, along with food not involving any beans. Come on by to enjoy this feast of protein! Vegetarian and vegan options will be available.

We will be giving short introductions to everything that CAMP is up to for the new year, including elections for folks who help run CAMP!

We will be screening several films in the upstairs library for your enjoyment:

“My paintings are a sort of documentation and exploration of memory, personal relationships and the underbelly of the American cultural landscape. By using a range of mark making and line work I build the image within a few layers. In the paintings I allow imagery from one instance to blend into another like a seamless collage.The logic of memory works very much like the logic of dreaming and that idea has been one of the underpinnings of my work and something that I am just really fascinated by. I try to combine the fluidity of memory with a delicate line and modulated color washes that cast a poetic resonance to capture the character of a memory caught midstream.”

The Luminary Center for the Arts has announced plans to move to Cherokee Street next year, bringing more equipment, studio space and resources to Cherokee's burgeoning visual arts scene.

Luminary co-founder James McAnally said Wednesday that the center has an option to buy a former variety store at 2700 Cherokee Street.

Samuel Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape", Live at the Firecracker Press

The Firecracker Press will host four (4), weekend performances of Samuel Beckett’s “Krapp’s Last Tape” Dec. 9-10 and 16-17 at 7pm. LIVE theater in the printshop!

KRAPP’S LAST TAPE, a 1-man Beckett classic, is said to be as near an autobiography as Beckett wrote. In it, the 69-yr-old Krapp listens to a tape of himself at 39, comments, then records a new tape reviewing the events of the last year.

With Rob Suozzi as Krapp, directed by Dennis Corcoran and presented by The Black Mirror Theatre Company.

$10.00 donation at the door.

Letterpress Printing Spring 2012 – No1 Classes at the Firecracker Press

The Firecracker Press's Letterpress Printing Spring 2012 – No1 (2012_NO1_S). is a comprehensive five week course focusing on the traditional methods of letterpress printing. Students can learn the basics of handsetting metal type, how to make a woodcut or photopolymer plate, mixing ink by hand, and learning the ins and outs of choosing paper. Our Vandercook printing presses and antique platen presses will be available for use. Each student will create an editioned piece of their design to exchange with all students, so everyone leaves the class with a small portfolio of fine prints! No prior experience needed.

DEADLINE -JAN. 9th – space is limited.

Cherokee Street offers One-of-a-Kind Holiday finds

Neighborhood’s Fourth Annual Print Sale Showcases
Local Artists and Businesses
St. Louis, MO. (October 2011) – Cherokee Print League, a vital contributor to the blossoming art scene in the South City/South Grand area, has announced plans for its fourth annual holiday print sale. The print sale showcases local artists and businesses whose work is print-related including printmaking, letterpress, screen printing, and printed fabrics. The sale is Saturday, December 3rd, 10:00AM – 7:00PM and provides holiday shoppers with creative ways to complete their shopping lists. Some of the unique activities planned at the numerous print shops and galleries along Cherokee Street include tours, demonstrations, and custom items printed on the spot. Galleries will host several of the artists whose work is exhibited. Maps will be provided at each participating location. For more information, please visit http://cherokeeprintleague.com.

In March of this year, Cherokee Street was fortunate enough to host an evening of printmaking events as part of the SGC International Printmaking Conference sponsored by Washington University. With thousands of attendees (participants and on-lookers), the street was lit up in celebration of art and community, gaining international attention. Several businesses continue to make their mark in printmaking and other creative fields including architecture, literary culture and art galleries. Annually, hundreds of people turn up for this event to mosey along the historic shopping district and purchase the printed wares of local artists. Building off of the excitement from SGC, this year’s bound to be larger than ever. A sampling of the participants and their events for CPL 2011 include the following:

Printmakers
All Along Press (2712 Cherokee St.), a cooperative print shop specializing in letterpress printing, screen printing, fine art printmaking and book arts, works with artists, writers and designers on a local and national level to create a variety of printed materials. You will find many unique items available for purchase, including limited edition books and prints. Take a tour of the impressive studio stocked with letterpress, etching, silk-screening and bookmaking equipment and machinery. If you are intrigued by these age-old processes, sign up for one of the many workshops and classes open to the public.

Firecracker Press (2838 Cherokee St.) was recently named one of the Top 40 Letterpress Studios in the country. This year, the folks at Firecracker will be hand-printing custom stationery on the spot. What could be more fun than picking your favorite image & paper, and then watching as the skilled artists crank your one-of-a-kind goods through the nostalgic, big, metal presses? Firecracker Press is building a nest on Cherokee Street among the grassroots movement of artists, rehabbers, restaurants, coffee shops and entertainment. Eric Woods, owner of Firecracker Press, is excited about this year’s sale. “We’ve been in it from the beginning, and it keeps getting bigger and bigger each year.” Also at Firecracker during the print sale event will be a special performance of presses and instruments. All the presses will be running while printing a book, accompanied by guitar, drums, and other traditional musical instruments. The performance is over when the edition is complete. Audience members will be encouraged to participate, and everyone gets to take a freshly made book home with them. It will be a cacophony of printmaking and musical experimentation!

Porter Teleo (3323 Cherokee St.), designer and maker of high-end, handmade wall coverings and textiles in Chicago, New York, L.A., and Miami showrooms, will be selling seconds, off-color and off-printed wallpapers. The special wallpapers and fabrics are used in the most exclusive homes in the country, and the small business has been a favorite among Hollywood celebrities and trendy magazines including Vogue, Architectural Digest & Elle Décor. Usually closed to the public, owner Kelly Porter says, “One spot here or there, and the whole roll has to be scrapped. We’ll be selling these yard by yard at drastically reduced prices for people to use as artwork, gift-wrap, whatever inspires them.” Porter Teleo will also be selling hand-dyed scarves and other holiday gift items at the sale. The Porter Teleo team will be making wallpapers on the spot so curious participants can have fun watching & learning.

Paper Boat Studios (located just east of Jefferson Avenue) is a cross-country collaboration between artist, Amy Thompson, and her Seattle based-business partner.
The print studio offers letterpress printed cards, calendars, gift tags, games, and ornaments, in addition to hand-bound journals and sketchbooks, and custom work. Alongside her collaborative project, Amy teaches typography and book design at Maryville University.

Sleepy Kitty is the graphic arts and music project of Paige Brubeck and Evan Sult.
The duo arrived at Cherokee Street on a visit from Chicago because they were hunting for Retro 101, a vintage shop of legendary sweet finds. Once on the street, they started fantasizing about setting up shop in one of the many available buildings there. They couldn’t afford afford to design and print posters, make artwork, write and play music in Chicago. As the artistic community has coalesced on Cherokee, they’ve been able to make their own artwork their own way. The duo started making posters for their own bands in Chicago in 2007 and relocated to St. Louis in late 2008 to set up their screen printing and art studio. Sleepy Kitty creates posters and screen printed goods for bands, theater companies, venues, wedding and commitment ceremonies, and other interesting events. They were named “2011 Best Poster Designer” by the Riverfront Times. Their band, also called Sleepy Kitty, is active in St. Louis and the surrounding region, and just released its first album, “Infinity City,” in July 2011. During the sale, you can find them exhibiting at Foam Coffee & Beer.

STL-Style / Lighthouse Print & Design (3159 Cherokee St.), featured by the New York Times, are creators and purveyors of colorful, diverse, quirky and loveable St. Louis-inspired apparel and merchandise. Creators (and identical twins) Jeff and Randy Vines have been active in a number of civic efforts in the revitalization of St. Louis, and they use STL-Style as a launching pad for their advocacy. STyLehouse is the collective home base of two of Cherokee Street’s emerging creative enterprises: STL-Style, whose neighborhood branded apparel and merchandise are must-haves for any proud St. Louis city dweller; and Lighthouse Print & Design, an independent specialty screen printer and graphic design shop. The two companies operate separately, but they join forces to make STyLehouse a premier destination on Cherokee Street and beyond. Jeff Vines feels the neighborhood art sale is rare and special, full of creative talent and an intangible sense of hopefulness and whimsy. He says about the ever-growing arts district, ”Cherokee is the perfect example of an urban district evolving in just the right way. There aren’t one or two heavy-handed developers calling the shots here; it’s a neighborhood effort that everyone takes an active role in shaping. Longtime businesses sit shoulder-to-shoulder with a recent crop of immigrant-owned merchants and dynamic artists and creative enterprises. Cherokee also has incredible bones. It’s a solid, dense neighborhood that evokes a distinctive sense of place, and when you’re here you know you’re in a cool city. There’s a collaborative spirit here that is not common everywhere, and we need to embrace that. It sounds hokey, but there’s a sense that we’re all in this together.”

Galleries
During the print sale, each of these galleries will be open to the public hosting a handful of artists who are exhibiting their wares.

Aisle 1 Gallery (2627 Cherokee St.) was founded by Bryan Walsh and Jenn Carter, presents work by established and emerging artists. Showcasing painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture and mixed media work, the gallery will host solo and paired solo shows, with additional group exhibitions throughout winter and summer.

Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts (3151 Cherokee St.) fell in love with Cherokee Street’s main street like facades, reminiscent of an Edward Hopper painting. The gallery provides a forum for emerging artists, local students and community members. The gallery currently features new prints by Dan Zettwock, well-known for his St. Louis cartoons and caricatures.

Snowflake Gallery (3156 Cherokee St.) was the winner of River Front Times Best Gallery Exhibition of the Year in 2009. Showing local, regional, and national contemporary artists since 2003, the gallery’s most recent exhibition (Wonder Koch + Eliza Newman-Saul, What’s the Use?) was reviewed by Jessica Baran, of White Flag Projects, in the September edition of Art Papers.

Foam Coffee & Beer (3359 South Jefferson Avenue), located on the corner of Cherokee and Jefferson, will be hosting artists during the Cherokee Print League sale. It’s an ideal place to start/end your tour of Cherokee as you can pick up a map, buy prints, coffee, hot chocolate, irish coffee, whatever you want and relax in the comfy seating areas along with the artists, including Sleepy Kitty.

More Info	Resulting from backgrounds of bluegrass, classical, jazz and country, The Pretty Darns from Salt Lake City, Utah create a fusion of sound not quite compatible to a specific genre. Utilizing strong vocal harmonies, instrumentation of mandolin, guitar, violin and sometimes banjo, the closest fit would be bluegrass, with the influences seeping through each of their melodies, rhythms and interpretations. Each member brings their own individuality to the emerging all-girl trio. Jazz pianist and vocalist, Liz Woolley, has successfully transferred her songwriting skills to the mandolin. Annemarie Neff, classically trained vocalist and percussionist, brings her uncanny sense of harmonizing to the vocals and rhythmic ideas to the guitar. The Firecracker Press is preparing for its 2011 Poetry Reading Series. This is the first call of the year, and while dates remain tentative, we will begin booking as selected poems are gathered.

The following outlines some general information regarding the event:
- Readings will be twice a month starting in July and running indefinitely through the remainder of the year. The event will begin at 2:00 p.m.
- The prints are part of the entertainment; we will be printing as you are reading. For those not familiar with The Firecracker Press, we use antique printing technology, complete with all of the clicks and groans of our manual presses. Please go here for a virtual peek into the shop.

Create your design using vintage illustration blocks and wood type. Learn the basics of setting metal type to print matching envelopes with your return address.

Students will familiarize themselves with the make-ready process, mixing inks, and printing on the Vandercoook #4 and Kelsey tabletop presses. All materials are provided, and students will leave with their own set of personalized letterhead and envelopes.

The artist, a St. Louis native, holds a B.A. from Webster University and currently lives in Webster Groves with her husband and young son. After spending fourteen years as an educator working with children and families with special needs, Deanna now devotes her time to the studio creating new pieces. Dennis DeToye: Using oil on canvas, DeToye paints giant faces, some as tall as feet! He chooses ordinary subjects whose faces he finds interesting: “Mostly, I look for a face that I like for reasons that I can’t exactly explain. I like glasses because of the reflections and shadows on the face. I like people of color because of the rich skin tones. I like older people because of the lines and folds. I prefer not to paint celebrities or beautiful people and I almost never pick a subject based on his or her personality or because I know the person.” ~ Dennis DeToye DeToye received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Western Illinois University, and completed his Masters Degree at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He worked as an editorial cartoonist and a teacher and was Chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Edwardsville High School when he retired. Ruth Reese: Working primarily with red earthenware, Ruth’s work is an expression of the richness of the medium. Her pieces are layered with drawings and reliefs giving them a dreamy and wistful atmosphere. Whether creating functional pots or sculptural works, she combines engobes, majolicas, slips and decals into narratives that float across the surface. Her work can be described as ceramic forms with graphic illustrations, which seek to be both challenging and beautiful. Within the ceramics community she has exhibited locally and nationally. Ruth Reese holds an MFA in Sculpture (2002) from Washington University and a BA (1997) from Loyola University. She has taught at Maryville University, St. Louis Community College, St. Charles Community College, Jefferson College, Lewis & Clark College and East Central College.

This informal evening workshop focuses on the one-of-a-kind print made from stencils, found textures, offset processes, and collage. Experience the collaborative nature of printmaking as you work alongside other artists and around a 30×48″ Takach etching press. We’ll explore the monoprint as a medium for reactive image-building rather than careful planning. Student will go home with several complex and multi-layered prints on fine art paper.
Limited to 8 students. All materials provided. Bring your favorite CD or playlist to share!

Letterpress 1: Stationery

Print your own personalized stationery using antique printing methods! Create your design using vintage illustration blocks and wood type. Learn the basics of setting metal type to print matching envelopes with your return address.
Students will familiarize themselves with the make-ready process, mixing inks, and printing on the Vandercook #4 and Kelsey tabletop presses. All materials are provided, and students will leave with their own set of personalized letterhead and envelopes.
Limited to 4 students. This class serves as a prerequisite for “Letterpress 2″ classes. Successful completion of “Letterpress 2″ is needed to be certified to work independently as a letterpress member of All Along Press.

Letterpress 1: Typography

Explore the history of typography using the centuries-old method of metal type and letterpress. Discover the origins of words like kerning, leading, and font. Become a type snob as you explore the subtleties of letterspacing and discuss common mistakes designers make when working digitally with type.
Students will be introduced to the Vandercook #4 letterpress, make-ready process, and ink mixing as they work collaboratively to produce a limited edition poster using a variety of wood and metal type. Each student will get to keep several copies of the finished print. All materials are included.

Create a hand-printed poster using your own design. Discover the best way to adapt digital or hand-drawn graphics for screen printing. Learn to coat, expose, and reclaim screens photochemically. By the end of this workshop, students will be able to register multiple colors and produce reliable prints. Screens, ink, and white paper are provided. Students should bring completed drawings or designs for a 12×18 poster. (Lacking inspiration? You can learn the process using designs we have on-hand.)
Limited to 5 students. Upon completion of this class, students will be eligible to work independently as a screen printing studio member.

March 25-May 7 (F)utility Kitchen, a new site-specific grow installation by Leslie Mutchler.

(F)utility Kitchen experiments with making rudimentary tools and methods of cultivation and sustainability for edible vegetation in a confined space. A gravity-drip irrigation system is built from hardware pieces, IKEA furniture, and do-it-yourself irrigation supplies. Grow lights are suspended in canning jars and crudely-built wood shelving contains recycled paper bits, empty hand-made bowls and jars of seed, awaiting their purpose.

Opening reception: Fri. March 25, 7-10 pm

"fine print" showcases two printmakers who create monoprints using very different techniques. Rosen creates monoprints using waterless lithography and seriography. With a nod to Jim Dine's robes, Rosen
uses women's vintage slips as the subject of her work. By contrast Joe Chesla creates process directed, "mineral" prints incorporating nontraditional techniques to impregnate fine printmaking paper with a
recording of the corrosive process of metal. He takes this process one step further by adding dissolved salt to the mineral bath, which re-crystallizes on the paper diffusing and distracting from the underlying imagery. Encaustic techniques enrich the visual depth and physical presence.

Bad Shoe Issue 5 will be available at the special release price of $8. No cover charge.

The Firecracker Press at the SGC International Conference

The Firecracker Press, a St. Louis graphic design and letterpress studio, is pleased to announce their involvement in the 2011 SGC International Conference. The conference is an annual printmaking conference hosted by a different city each year. St. Louis was selected as the 2011 host city, and artists from all over the United States and several other countries will attend the conference. This year is St. Louis’ chance to shine, and all of its printmakers are working hard to make that happen, including The Firecracker Press.

Both Eric Woods (owner) and Matty Kleinberg (shop manager) are participating in several art exhibits and demonstrations. Although there are conference events happening all four days, Friday night’s activities highlight the Cherokee Street area, where Firecracker is located. Between printed yet tasty tacos, printing presses turned musical instruments and a wall of type, there is something to keep you busy all night long.

The following is a list of activities and events The Firecracker Press will be involved in, and we hope you are able to attend at least a few. Firecracker will also be open for regular business hours, Mon-Fri 10-6 and Sat 11-5 pm.

Friday, March 18th:

Cherokee Printmakers' Special
Time: 5-10p
Location: In front of Latino Americana, 2800 Cherokee St.

Project coordinators Eric Woods and Kim Wardenburg are collaborating with Carlos Dominguez of Latino Americana Restaurant, as well as Ana Rivera of El Chico Bakery and other participants from the neighborhood, to serve up the "Printmakers' Special"—a taco meal complete with edible, printed tortillas inspired by the people of Cherokee Street. A free, limited-edition zine with their stories will be given to the first 250 people who purchase the "Printmakers' Special."

Manual Feed
Reception: 8p
Location: The Firecracker Press, 2838 Cherokee St.

Join The Firecracker Press for the first and only performance of Manual Feed, an experimental music group comprised of print-makers and print-lovers! We'll click, rattle, and roll our way to an ear-shattering fusion of printmaking and musical experimentation as we play our presses. All this cacophony will produce a physical realization, a short book printed before your very eyes as we play that will be free to all takers. Audience members are welcome to join in.

St. Louis Typefoundries
Opening Reception: 5-10p
Location: The Firecracker Press, 2838 Cherokee St.

In the late 1800s, St. Louis was rich with typefoundries that were casting the popular typefaces of the day. A few were even hiring designers to develop new type styles that would also be cast and distributed from St. Louis. Many of those typefaces are still being used today and have been transformed for use in digital form. The Firecracker Press is exhibiting a host of type specimens and samples that were designed and cast just blocks from our studio door.

Amos Kennedy demo
Time: 9a-12p
Location: The Firecracker Press, 2838 Cherokee St.

Amos Kennedy, letterpress printer and subject of the documentary, "Proceed and be Bold", will be hosting a demonstration of various printing techniques at The Firecracker Press. Amos left his white-collar job to pursue his love of printing and never looked back. Come learn and listen. Free to the public and open to all!

A distant relative of the food truck, the PrintTruck will nourish passersby with an up-close-and-personal look at a tabletop platen press, a foldout exhibition of letter-pressed posters, and the knowledge of the printers themselves. Sponsored by The Firecracker Press, this mobile letterpress demonstration will pop up in several locations over the course of the conference with little to no warning aside from periodic updates via Twitter @FirecrackerP. Fabulous samples and fun await all who approach the PrintTruck—keep your eyes peeled for it as you explore St. Louis.

Lights Along the Cherokee

Location Cherokee Street

6-foot-tall paper lanterns, each constructed and designed by a different group of local artists, community organizers, and citizens, will be placed at various points along Cherokee Street by lead artist Bob Hartzell, a local printmaker, will also make a series of silkscreen-covered towers, all based upon a common theme, to provide a design touchstone that ties this diverse group of lamps together. Several of these lamps will be designed and printed by, and installed at the Firecracker Press.

At the conference, there will be live printing of these pre-carved linoleum blocks, which will consist of images of various appendages, heads, and torsos of beings real and imagined. This exhibition features both traditional forms of letterpress, as well as depictions of contemporary evolutions linking the idea of text and image—and of letter and line—allowing these components to become co-expressive elements within the object or composition. This show features the work of both individuals and some of the finest print shops in the nation.

The Love Library Project by Chido Johnson

In conjunction with Washington Universities Printmaking Conference, "Love Librarian" Jana Harper brings Chido Johnson's Love Library Project to Craft Alliance. This project takes the concept of love as a theme to be explored in book form.
